MAÏTÉ HONTELÉ'S NJJO goes Mambo!
Tempo Latino has been looking to program this magnificent and talented artist, Maïté HONTELE, for many years...
All those years she spent in Colombia and then with Cuban musicians, composing and integrating her compositions and trumpet impros into multiple projects, left her with a reserve of performances in Europe. If you look hard enough and don't give up, you'll find it...
For 2 years now, Maïté has been directing, composing, arranging and performing as soloist with this Collective of young musicians from Europe and beyond (Holland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Canada) of the NJJO (National Jeugd Jazz Orkest) in Holland.
For this exceptional and exclusive project, we needed a full orchestra of 20 professional musicians, an artist who composes and rallies around an original project, and compositions based on Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Afro-Cuban and Jazz to offer a repertoire with Latin colors. For Maïté Hontelé, "There isn't just one type of Mambo, but a world of mambo variations and new contemporary crossovers nourished by ever-changing Latin grooves, with jazz improvisations that work perfectly. For the NJJO, this offers a range of musical possibilities of guaranteed depth and joy'' for this European MAMBO Olympiad.
"The forces of Latin and jazz together in one band that is Mambo. I once fell (and still am) in love with that. Mambo is always in style and delivers a wide range of possibilities, both for the great NJJO with whom I recorded this album, and for the audience. Depth and cheerfulness guaranteed! We have involved composers and arrangers who have both feet in the present. For example, Philip Lassiter, the funk and jazz trumpet player who, amongst others, played with Prince, wrote a funky Mambo. And Juancho Valencia, the multi-Grammy-winning musician from Colombia, wrote a Cumbia (traditional Colombian rhythm) for our project."
